Originally posted by:I had it installed to my system drive first, thought an SSD might speed up those loading screens. Here's my details, maybe if we gather some data we can troubleshoot this. Intel SSD SC2BW 240 A4 - Windows 8.1 installed - Didn't work Western Digital WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0 - Works Weird, again, it was working on my secondary drive (WD 1TB Caviar Black) until I took a break from it for a week or so, tried to launch it the other day, and that issue happened.

I also have the Sneaky Upgrade installed, I didn't try it without it. The only thing that changed on my computer in that span of time was a Steam client update. After I installed it on my main drive (WD 500GB Blue, Win 7), it worked again, Sneaky Upgrade and all. If all or most of us have the same issue, I'm thinking it isn't because of having an SSD or Win 8, and from the looks of it, it may not always be an exclusive problem when installed on the secondary drive. Since it's cropped up so recently (at least on this forum), I'm starting to think it's most likely on Steam's side with how they are reading the install files? Or perhaps a recent Steam update introduced an incompatability with the Sneaky Upgrade?

Ok so I bought Thief during the summer sale on steam, and after Installing it I did the tutorial and got up to the part where you have to pick a lock on a door.

Thief

These are uncompressed files, just like any other release. The thing that may happen is Steam verifying the files and replacing with original ones, but that usually happens only when you try 'repairing' Steam or you remove some important files for Steam, like the blob file. A Steam update screwing up Sneaky Upgrade is a possibility - the thing is, I have Windows 7 and only HDDs (because SSDs are ridiculously expensive here at the moment). I'm also using Steam Beta update branch - either way, not experienced any problems with Steam screwing up Sneaking Upgrade so far. Sorry, what I mean is how Steam has made it possible to install games into a secondary library or onto another hard drive (isn't it called 'Steamworks?' I'm not sure). If you remember, at one point not very long ago, this was not possible, and they added support for this by a game by game basis.

I'm just wondering if a recent Steam Client update created a directory issue for some with this specific game and Sneaky Upgrade installed. Sneaky Upgrade does need to be pointed to a specific install directory to work properly. Just thinking out loud here. Originally posted by: What do you mean 'how they are reading the install files'? Most likely not. What I'm thinking is that it's possible, that Thief: Deadly Shadows - like many games that used to be available in retail used to create registry that refer to a location it's installed in during its installation. Since, Steam just downloads files and doesn't launch any other installer, its Steam that creates these entries based on installscript.vdf that you find in your Thief directory. I know these entries are created properly when installing Thief: Deadly Shadows for the first time, but it might be that installation script skips them, if you remove the game and installs it in different location (as other preinstallation steps are usually skipped, if you reinstall the game on Steam). These entries should be located in: HKEYLOCALMACHINE SOFTWARE Wow6432Node Ion Storm Thief - Deadly Shadows And no - Steamworks as far as I know refers in general to SteamAPI - which is partially DRM (as in - the game doesn't launch without Steam) and partially offers access to other Steam features like Steam Browser (so we don't have to use Gamespy and we can check on which server our friends are playing directly in Steam), Steam Achievements etc. I may not be entirely right - but it's more or less this.

The thing with folders as far as I know it's just called Steam Library Folders. Originally posted by: Sorry, what I mean is how Steam has made it possible to install games into a secondary library or onto another hard drive (isn't it called 'Steamworks?'

With that said, and If this isn't a simple fluke affecting a few people, then it had to have been caused by a Steam client update modifying files that corrupted the existing installs for this specific game, perhaps exhaserbated by those who had the game installed with the Sneaky Upgrade, which remember, isn't even an official fix. Maybe the very reason it didn't effect your install is because you are opted into the Steam Beta updates branch. I don't know about the others, but I'm not opted into the beta updates.

Again, just thinking out loud.

I finished this game in normal difficulty with over 20 hs of play. It worked fine. This was like 2 months ago. Now I want to play it again, this time in expert. So I clicked the game icon like I always did but now I get this message: 'Failed to start game (app already running)' I restarted Steam and same thing happens. Restarted my computer.

And then I uninstalled the game, restarted my computer and installed the game again. And I still get this freakin' error!! I have 8 games currently installed and they all work fine. What should I do?
