Soulseek Folder Lock
Posted : admin On 05.09.2019If you search for an album, get results, then right click any track then Download Folder(s), it works. But there is a case where this feature never works (on Mac): you search for a track, get results, then if you right click that single track/file and Download Folder(s), in order to get the full album or compilation, it does not work and you'll only dl that single file, not the folder containing it. This is very annoying. The only turnaround for me was to right click the track then Browse Folder, then, once inside the user's folder, use Download Folder(s). The build I was using was almost a year old, and I just downloaded the latest build, and it adds a new layer of frustration: Browse Folder is gone. And this is stupid because while Browse folder would send you directly to the specific folder containing that single track, Browse user's files sends you at the root of the user's folders, and you have to navigate trough his (more than often messy) files to get to the folder.
Fixed downloads being prematurely marked as complete, in apparent relation to the `don't use complete/downloading folders` option. User share action buttons should now show up even if the folder list isn't selected. Extra spaces are no longer swallowed in private and room chat. User info should now show properly on Soulseek NS clients. Qt opinion / questions / ideas. Hello there Nir. Long time Soulseek user here so first of all I really want to take the chance to say a big, honest.
I hope this gets fixed soon by a dev who actually uses slsk (I can't believe that a regular user would go backwards like this).
I don't think you can do that through Soulseek, but it's perfectly feasible. Of course the easiest way is to move the folder., but you may not want to do that. The best way to do it, then, is to define file permissions for the folder you don't want to share such that the user you run Soulseek with cannot read it, whilst your regular user can. Notice that this only works if you run Soulseek with another user (i.e. Not with the user you log in your computer with).

File permissions can be set on Windows and I am pretty sure you can run something as a different user on Windows as well, but you'll have to look it up on how to do that. On Linux it's pretty straight forward. Create a user for Soulseek and a group: useradd slsk -user-group slsk Set the file permissions on the folder you want to share such that owner and group (users belong to groups) can read it: chmod -R u+r,g+r parent Set the permission such that only the owner of the folder you do not want to share can read it: chmod u+r,g-r,o-r parent/child Set yourself as the owner and slsk as the group: chown -R you:slsk parent Done. Now just run Soulseek as slsk: sudo -u slsk soulseek-qt & In fact, now that I've brought up the subject, you should be running Soulseek and every other application with internet access as its own user with limited file system access.

This way if, for example, you click on a bad link and it takes you to a page that compromises your browser by exploiting some vulnerability in it, it will only have access to the files and folders the user you run your browser with has, which can be limited to only the files the browser needs to access, such as your Downloads folder and the browser config files, but nothing else. So even if you click on malware the effects are limited (given that you do not download shit and run it as your regular user). This is called sandboxing, is a tutorial on how to set it up on Linux. My setup is: drwxrwx- 35 me me 65536 Aug 11 04:05 me drwxrwx- 11 ff me 4096 Aug 11 03:50 ff drwxr-x- 147 me slsk 4096 Aug 4 02:24 music drwxrwx- 10 slsk me 4096 Jul 15 00:47 slsk Only I can write to my home folder, but both me and Firefox/Soulseek can write to their home folders, and there is a shared music folder which both me and Soulseek can read, but only I can write to (Soulseek downloads go into slsk/Downloads and I manually move them into music later).
or copy the parent folder and remove the child you do not want to share in the shared folder copy.
